Gem Stone Shop TipsThe first synthetic diamonds were produced by General Electric in 1954. A synthetic diamond should not be confused with stimulant diamonds, such as glass, cubic zirconia, or moissanite. A synthetic diamond is basically a rock that has the durability, refractive index and hardness of a natural diamond – but it is made by man. These diamonds sell for about 1/3 of the cost of a natural diamond, but there is a shortage of them, and they are hard to find. Today, Gemesis produces synthetic white diamonds, and colored diamonds as well. Finally, a small company by the name of Gemesis Corporation figured out a way to produce synthetic diamonds that were of the same quality as natural diamonds, at a cheaper price. Gem Stone Shop AdviceHe first discovered this greenish zinc carbonate mineral from the Kelly Mine in New Mexico. Another huge mineral in the exhibit is the Smithsonite, named for James Smithson, who bequeathed the funds to establish the Smithsonian Institution. You will need to make certain that you rinse them clear of the suds after cleaning them. Simply make a bowl of warm sudsy water with a mild detergent and place your pieces in the mixture. Use a lint free cloth, or a jewelry polish cloth to pat them dry. Then brush the diamonds with the soft bristles of the brush while they are in the suds. You can use a small kitchen strainer such as a tea strainer to contain them while rinsing under warm water.
